Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) schedules community use of fields and gyms on behalf of partner agencies (Community Use). For this reason, permit holders must refer to the appropriate agency websites for official field and facility status updates and are responsible for communicating any changes to their teams, participants and families.
The safety of participants, coaches, officials, staff, and spectators is always the top priority when making decisions about the use of fields and gyms during inclement weather. Conditions such as snow, ice, extreme cold, heat, or poor air quality can create unsafe environments. Permit holders are expected to follow all applicable facility policies and make decisions that prioritize participant and staff safety.
Permit holders should consult the appropriate agency guidance when determining whether activities may proceed.

Fairfax County Park Authority Fields
Field status for Park Authority fields only may be obtained by dialing 703-324-5264, TTY 711, or on the Park Authority website. Athletic field status is updated Monday through Friday by 3 p.m.; status is not updated on weekends or county holidays. Leagues and game officials are responsible for determining playability of fields on weekends and communicating that information to teams and participants. If a group utilizes a field that is unplayable and causes damage to the field, the group may be held responsible for any maintenance costs. Please see the links below for determining field playability for diamond and rectangular natural grass fields.
For more information, visit the Park Authority's Athletic Field Status page.
Fairfax County Public Schools Outdoor Fields & Indoor Gyms
If Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) facilities or offices are closed due to weather, or if FCPS cancels all activities on school grounds, this applies to all FCPS fields and gyms. Find information on FCPS weather cancellation procedures.
In all other instances, groups scheduled at FCPS athletic fields are asked to use their best judgement if a field is playable. If a group utilizes a field that is unplayable and causes damage to the field, the group may be held responsible for any maintenance costs.
Neighborhood and Community Services Community Centers
NCS follows Fairfax County Government for all weather cancellations. If Fairfax County Government is closed (for a full day, delay or early dismissal), all NCS facilities will be closed for the duration of that closure. Additional information will be posted on the NCS Inclement Weather Guidance page.
