Police Officers Retirement System - Active Members

Military and Other Public Safety Service Purchases

Police Officers now have the ability to purchase up to 4 years of military or other public safety service with certain limits and conditions. 

  • 10/24/2024 - To receive an estimated prior service purchase calculation prior to Fiscal Year 2025 salary increases taking effect, applications for service purchase estimates must be submitted on or before October 24, 2024.  Additional information will be provided as it’s received. 

 

The Police Officers Retirement System is for sworn Fairfax County Police Officers. 

Service Retirement - Police

Service retirement is for employees who are one of the following:

Eligible for a full retirement benefit (Normal Service Retirement) Eligible for an early retirement benefit (Early Retirement) Vested but not eligible for an ordinary or early retirement benefit (Deferred Vested Retirement)

Each of these will be discussed in the sections below.

Disability Retirement - Police

Members who are still actively employed and become disabled may be eligible for a Disability Retirement benefit.

There are 2 categories of Disability Retirement benefits:

Ordinary Disability - for disabilities that are not job-related. Service-Connected Disability - for disabilities that are job-related and are not considered as a Severe Service-Connected disability.

Each of these will be explained in the sections that follow.

DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program)

DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program). DROP provides the ability for an employee to retire for purposes of the pension plan while continuing to work and receive a salary for a period of up to three years.

Police Survivor Benefits

In the event that an officer dies before their spouse and/or beneficiaries.do, there are benefits that will be payable to the spouse and/or children. The benefits vary depending upon whether the officer's death is before or after retirement.

Before Retirement

Beneficiary or beneficiaries receive:

Pre-Retirement Benefit Explanation Return of Contributions The officers employee contributions will be paid to their beneficiary unless an automatic benefit is payable to your surviving spouse or children. Note: Your spouse is the person to whom you are legally married on the date of your death, if that marriage is recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Automatic Death Benefits
