Volunteer Voices spotlights a variety of individuals who volunteer for the Department of Family Services Domestic and Sexual Violence Services programs and services.

Volunteers are an integral part of Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (DSVS) mission to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking by fostering a community based on equality and mutual respect through prevention and intervention, community engagement, and awareness, policy and advocacy. We could not do the work we do without help from our volunteers. (Learn about volunteering for DSVS.)

Meet the people who have been recognized in previous newsletters.

January – Monty Johnson
February – Norma Williamson
March – Alli Somasunduram

Monty Johnson"I feel people should be safe and comfortable in relationships, and I wanted to try to help people achieve that.

My advice to other potential volunteers is quite simple: Just do it. Being a DSVS volunteer is one of the most rewarding things a person can ever do. Yes, we do make a difference in people’s lives."

Norma Williamson thumbnail“It is a joy to work with terrific staff members on a program that makes a huge difference in people’s lives. I will never forget the time, many years ago, when my husband and I ran into a former client near our home; respecting confidentiality, we did not say anything to him. But first he blurted out: 'You are the ones who saved my marriage.’ That made our day!” said Norma Williamson.

Alli Somasunduram sitting with two people“I first started this to give back to the community, but realized the real reason was to be a great role model for my children,” said Alli. Her plan is working.

“One of the best moments I had volunteering was this past summer. I had to organize a bunch of brochures at home and my kids stepped in to help me. It was nice that they learned a little about what I do, and I could see they were interested.”

Vic Batson and two dogs"I have always been a huge proponent of volunteering. I have always believed we personally rise by lifting others. I’ve also tried to focus on happiness and self-renewal and have found the best way to both is by helping others."

Allison Lowry"I have volunteered in some capacity since high school when it was a required part of Civics class – I loved it and was hooked! After I got out of college, I worked in IT and that wasn’t “filling my bucket,” so I looked for volunteer opportunities."

Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (DSVS) graphic logo"The most rewarding part of being a court advocate is seeing how grateful the victims are to have someone who will listen to them and help them formulate their next steps in being safe and staying safe. They are often so alone in their situation and just being able to talk with someone who cares and wants to help gives them a sense of hope."
