JDC School Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a full 5.5 hour per day instructional school program at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC). The school program follows the FCPS calendar for instructional days. In addition to the regular school year, the JDC school program provides a month long summer session for enrichment, credit recovery, and extended school year opportunities.

The school program is responsible for educating all students while they reside at JDC. Once students are enrolled in the school program, a Notification of Enrollment is sent to the students’ base school and/or current school program. Parents are notified by mail that their son or daughter has been enrolled. When a student leaves JDC, their grades and test scores are mailed home, as well as sent to their prior school placement.

The JDC school program offers instruction in all of the academic content classes, as well as art and physical education. All JDC teachers are Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) licensed teachers and are certified in their respective instructional areas. All classes follow the FCPS Pacing Guides for instruction. The school program offers both online classes and traditional person to person instruction. While students are enrolled in the JDC school program, they may participate in the following activities: a positive behavior incentive program, a fairly comprehensive library with both English and Spanish book offerings, life skills classes, computer coding classes, and opportunities for sustained silent reading. In addition to our physical education program, students may also utilize the workout room and stationary bicycle and rowing machine room.

Upon arrival to JDC, all students are given reading and math assessments. Students are assessed every thirty days to monitor progress or to identify areas of instructional need. If students are detained during the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) testing window, they will be given the assessments while enrolled in the JDC school program. All test scores will be reported back to the parents and the students’ prior school placement. Students will be given credit for all instructional work completed, daily school attendance, and test scores, while they are enrolled in the JDC school program.
