George Mason Regional Library, and its grounds and parking lots, will close in late fall 2026 for a two-year renovation. In advance of the closure, library visitors will notice that items on shelves may be relocated or unavailable as FCPL begins to transfer the collection to another library location or storage. Project Background
In 2020, Fairfax County voters approved a Library bond referendum for the renovation and upgrades to four community and regional libraries, including the George Mason Regional Library (GMRL) located in the Mason district at 7001 Little River Tpke, Annandale, VA 22003. The library was constructed in 1960 and underwent an addition in 1970 and 1998. The building systems and infrastructure are nearing the end of their life cycle, and the layout does not meet the current and future operational needs of the library.
Project Description
The project is a renovation of the existing 28,000 square foot (SF) single-story facility. The proposed facility will include a modernized library space that will support the current and future programmatic and operational needs of library users and staff, a maker space and several gathering spaces and a flexible meeting space that will be open during and after library business hours. The parking lot will provide 191 parking spaces for the library users and staff. The project has the goal of achieving a minimum of LEED Gold certification, 50% energy reduction over current ASHRAE standards and Net Zero energy design and will utilize all electrical systems and equipment. The project includes rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) panels, an efficient heating and cooling system to reduce energy consumption, and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.
