George Mason Regional Library Renovation Update

George Mason Regional Library is closing this fall for an approximately two-year renovation. The last day of service will be October 23, 2026.  In advance of the closure, library visitors will notice that items on shelves may be relocated or unavailable as staff begin to transfer the collection to another library location or storage.

Dates to Know

October 9 – Last day to place holds for pick up at George Mason Regional Library
October 13 – Last day holds will be delivered to the branch
October 17 – George Mason Library Celebration & Open House 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
October 19 – Book donation acceptance resumes at George Mason Friends' temporary location (United Baptist Church, 7100 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003)
October 23 – Last day of service and to pick up holds
January 9, 2027 – Thomas Jefferson Library adopts regional branch hours
February 2027 – Culmore Library reopening

During George Mason Regional Library's Closure

Customers are invited to visit a nearby Fairfax County Public Library branch – close options include Kings Park, Richard Byrd and Thomas Jefferson libraries. Thomas Jefferson Community Library will adopt regional branch hours starting January 9, 2027. Culmore Library will reopen after HVAC upgrades are completed in early 2027.

Staff at any branch can assist customers with redirecting holds for pick up at nearby locations. Materials may be picked up at or returned to any FCPL branch. Digital library resources, including e-books, audiobooks and online databases, remain available 24/7 to all cardholders via the library’s website.

Customers with Holds

All customer holds will be paused for the duration of the closure unless otherwise changed in your library account to another branch. Your place in line will remain. If you wish to pick up your requested material at a different branch, you may change the designated pickup location or unsuspend holds by accessing your account.

Change Your Holds' Location in the Catalog

If you currently have George Mason Regional Library selected as your pickup location in your account, please change to another library.

Log into your library account.

Click Holds in the menu on the left, then select the item(s) for which you would like to change the pickup location.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Change Pickup Location, then select the new library from the dropdown menu and select Submit.

Book Sales, Donations and George Mason Friends

Book donation acceptance has now paused. During the renovation, the George Mason Friends group will continue to operate, accept donations and hold book sales at the United Baptist Church located at 7100 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003. Book donation acceptance at the new location will resume October 19.

Renovation Project Information

In 2020, Fairfax County voters approved a Library bond referendum for the renovation and upgrades to four community and regional libraries, including the George Mason Regional Library (GMRL) located in the Mason district at 7001 Little River Tpke, Annandale, VA 22003. The library was constructed in 1960 and underwent an addition in 1970 and 1998. The building systems and infrastructure are nearing the end of their life cycle, and the layout does not meet the current and future operational needs of the library.

The project is a renovation of the existing 28,000 square foot (SF) single-story facility. The proposed facility will include a modernized library space that will support the current and future programmatic and operational needs of library users and staff, a maker space and several gathering spaces and a flexible meeting space that will be open during and after library business hours. The parking lot will provide 191 parking spaces for the library users and staff. The project has the goal of achieving a minimum of LEED Gold certification, 50% energy reduction over current ASHRAE standards and Net Zero energy design and will utilize all electrical systems and equipment. The project includes rooftop Photovoltaic (PV) panels, an efficient heating and cooling system to reduce energy consumption, and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.
