Environmental Health

Fairfax County Health Department's Division of Environmental Health protects and improves public health by preventing, minimizing and eliminating exposure to biological, chemical or physical hazards through a variety of regulatory activities, including permitting and inspecting businesses and public facilities. Environmental Health Specialists also investigate reports of public health and safety menaces anywhere in the community including residential, commercial and industrial areas. In addition, the Health Department conducts mosquito and tick surveillance and a broad range of educational activities.

Transition of Regulatory Authority of Massage Establishments from Department of Cable and Consumer Services to the Fairfax County Health Department

We are pleased to share that beginning January 1, 2026, full regulatory authority of massage establishments will officially transition to the Fairfax County Health Department. We look forward to welcoming you as part of our regulated community and are committed to supporting you every step of the way.

At this time, there are no immediate actions required from you. Please continue to follow all existing processes with the Department of Cable and Consumer Services through December 31, 2025.

Our goal is to make the permitting experiences clear, accessible, and supported. In the coming days, we will announce:

  • Virtual Training Sessions: These sessions will help you prepare for the transition. These sessions will be recorded and posted online for your convenience.
  • One-on-One Support: We will offer opportunities for individual assistance.
  • Online Information: A webpage that will serve as a resource for transition.

Thank you for your patience and partnership as we move forward together towards a smooth and successful transition.

Sincerely,

Pieter A. Sheehan, REHS
Director, Division of Environmental Health
