The county oversees certain aspects of the collection and disposal activities for: collectors with a Certificate to Operate, recycling companies, commercial pay companies, tire disposal companies and other permitted disposal companies. Policies, Regulations and County Code

Permitted solid waste collection and disposal companies must comply with many regulations. Chapter 109.1 of the Code of the County of Fairfax, VA includes general requirements, recycling, precollection and storage, permits, enforcement and the collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste. There are rules and regulations for the I-66 Transfer Station Complex, the I-95 Landfill Complex and the Energy/Resource Recovery Facility, as well as specific program requirements. Failure to comply with any solid waste regulation may result in fines and suspension of permits or certificates to operate. The county uses solid waste advisories to communicate with the local waste industry and its customers. These advisories are formal notices of policies, clarifications of policies or rules, events, or other information that collection and disposal companies need to perform their work.

Recycling Program Requirements

Collectors are required to offer a recycling system for their residential, multifamily and nonresidential customers. Cardboard and mixed paper recycling is mandatory for all businesses and institutions. Details about material types, collection frequency, reporting requirements, etc. can be found in Chapter 109.1 as well as the Fairfax County Recycling Program Requirements.

Disposal Facility Locations and Hours

Fairfax County operates two solid waste disposal facilities: the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Disposal Complex.   Fairfax County trash is taken to Reworld Fairfax, Inc., the waste-to-energy facility. There, waste is burned to produce electricity. The remaining ash is landfilled at the I-95 Landfill Complex.
