April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month – Talk About Preventing Sexual Violence

How do you talk about consent, healthy relationships and preventing sexual violence with the young people in your life? Follow these tips.

  • Tell my younger cousins it’s OK if they don’t want to give me a hug goodbye.
  • Talk to people in my community about how to be an active bystander.
  • Educate my family members about myths regarding sexual assault when we talk about stories in the news.
  • Share books and articles by survivors of sexual assault with friends and family.
  • Ask my friends how they feel in their relationships.
  • Talk to my parents about what they learned about sex and sexual assault growing up.
  • silhouette-of-people-color-blocks-mauve-blue-orange-green.pngLet my friends know I am a safe person to talk to if they’ve experienced sexual harassment or assault.
  • Bust myths about sexual assault when I hear them in coworkers’ conversations.
  • Ask young people in my life what they know about consent and answer their questions.
  • Educate myself on sexual assault and consent so I can give others accurate information if it comes up in day-to-day conversations.
  • Let others know where they can find resources if they have been sexually assaulted.
