(Posted 2022 March)

victim-services-headerThe Victim Services Division (VSD), one of the Domestic Violence Action Center’s 16 partners, was formed to protect the rights of crime victims. VSD staff provides immediate and direct support to victims, their families, and witnesses who might be suffering emotionally, physically, and financially. These services help victims cope with the trauma and the aftermath of victimization and lessen the revictimization often associated with participation in the criminal justice process.

Part of the Major Crimes Bureau within Fairfax County Police Department, the VSD has a multilingual staff, along with a Spanish speaking unit. This allows victims to have a continuum of services from the moment the crime happens, throughout the criminal justice process and sometimes long after. Victim Services specialists aren’t law enforcement officers, but professional personnel that work alongside police officers and detectives to help provide a victim-centered, trauma-informed team approach to victims feel supported and empowered.
Victim Services:

  • Informs victims of their rights
  • Provides on-scene crisis intervention
  • Provides emotional support to victims and families
  • Assists with filing Virginia Victims' Fund claims
  • Assists with the Protective Order process
  • Assists with confidentiality and notification requests
  • Provides court advocacy, preparation, and accompaniment
  • Assists with victim impact statements

VSD services are free.
