wendy-wernerMeet Wendy Werner, ADAPT Volunteer

How long have you been volunteering? How long have you held this role in Fairfax County?

I have been a volunteer for many years. I was a reading mentor for elementary kids, medical support for a Susan B Komen’s Breast Cancer Walk, and walked in various Suicide Prevention walks, among other things. I have volunteered with Fairfax County Hotline since 2017 and the ADAPT program since 2019.

Why volunteer? Why volunteer for this specific program?

I feel it’s important to give back to your community and support worthy causes. I was in a domestic abuse situation, and I want to help others who are in similar situations with resources and a listening ear. If I can help even one person make a positive change in their life, then I did my part in making the world a better place.

Talk about how you overcome the most challenging parts of volunteering.

Some of the situations we assist with hit really close to home and touch old hurts. I find the strength to move through the hurt with my faith, learned coping measures, and self-care.

What’s the best part of volunteering? Share your most memorable experience.

The people I meet!!! The other volunteers and staff!

What has been your favorite training? What did you like about it? What did you learn?

I have attended many different training sessions and I can’t pick a favorite. I really liked when we were able to meet in person and interact with each other face to face. I try to learn something new from every training session, even training I have attended before. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into putting training together.

What advice do you have for people who may be thinking about becoming a DSVS volunteer?

Just do it! There are so many opportunities to help, and we need more helpers in the world. A few hours, months or years can make a world of difference to people in need of help.

What do you wish you could do more of as a volunteer?

Help. I just want to help as many people as I can and be a positive influence in my community.
