Meet Blain Tariku, Hotline Volunteer

Tell us a little about yourself. What is your professional background?
I worked as a foster care specialist for a total of three years, beginning my career in Florida, and then in Fairfax County. I then transitioned to a child abuse and neglect prevention program, where I remain today. I am currently working toward completing my MSW.

How long have you been volunteering? What led to your initial desire to volunteer and serve others?
I have been volunteering on and off for most of my adult life. Usually for one-off events. Last year, I decided to pour more of my time into volunteering regularly. A DSVS training was offered by my employment with Fairfax County and through that I became informed of the many volunteer opportunities through DSVS and felt drawn to supporting this population in the county and community I grew up in. Volunteering, specifically through DSVS, is an opportunity to support and uplift my community in a way that looks different from my employment. There are so many supports and services through DSVS and connecting people to the right service for them is something I am passionate about.

What has been your favorite training? What did you like about it? What did you learn?
I would say my favorite training was the Domestic Violence Tier One and Sexual Violence Tier One. I learned so much from not only the DSVS team but also from the people in the community who work closely with people experiencing violence. I appreciated that it was a multidisciplinary approach to training.

What advice do you have for people who may be thinking about becoming a DSVS volunteer?
If you are thinking about becoming a DSVS volunteer, I would say to go for it! The training is extensive and you have opportunities along the way to ask questions and determine if the role is a good fit for you. You get the chance to practice and always have someone support you.

What are some of your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy reading, traveling, and the occasional trashy reality TV show. I love spending time with friends, family, and my cat. I am interested in gardening, and I look forward to exploring that more as the weather gets warmer.
