Being an active bystander means noticing when someone's behavior is inappropriate or threatening and choosing to challenge it.
Read the Room
- Notice a situation where someone may need help.
- Recognize it as a problem.
- Intervene when safe, whether by disruption, distraction, speaking up, or calling for help.
- Support and believe others when they talk about what they experience.

There is no legal requirement for a bystander to take action, but if you see an incident and feel uncomfortable intervening, call the Domestic and Sexual Violence 24-Hour Hotline at 703-360-7273. If danger is imminent, call 911.
