Internships with Riverbend Park

Title:  Nature Education Intern

Salary: $300/week for the summer, most interns will dedicate 10-12 weeks.  
Location: Riverbend Park, 8700 Potomac Hills Street, Great Falls, VA 22066
Hours: 8:00AM- 5:00PM Monday to Friday approximately

Description:  Riverbend Park is part of the Fairfax County Park Authority and includes over 400 acres of forest, meadows, and ponds. Riverbend offers diverse summer programming, including summer camps for campers age 3-15, family programs, fishing programs and kayak tours. Because Riverbend Park is part of the Potomac Gorge system and has within its boundaries unusual and rare plant and animal species, field studies are conducted throughout the summer to monitor and continue inventorying species.

Nature education interns will assist park naturalists and summer camp teachers in leading various camp programs at Riverbend Park and other Fairfax County Park Authority sites as needed. Interns will gain experience working with children ranging from 3 years to 15 years old, learn informal education skills and engage in some natural resources management.

Requirements:  Must enjoy and have enthusiasm for working with children. College students or graduates preferably with major in Education, Biology, Environmental Science, or Parks and Recreation. Successful candidates will also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.

All successful applicants must also agree to a criminal background check including fingerprinting, provide negative TB results, attend mandatory training, possess current or acquire first aid and CPR certifications before the start of camps, and have never been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect, exploitation or other barrier crimes as listed on the Sworn Disclosure Statement of the Criminal Record Check. Valid Driver's License.

Description:  Join our team of environmental and outdoor educators at Riverbend Park this summer. Riverbend Park is part of the Fairfax County Park Authority and includes over 400 acres of forest, meadows, and ponds. Riverbend offers diverse summer programming, including summer camps for campers age 3-15, family programs, fishing programs and kayak tours. This internship is an excellent opportunity for someone with an interest in outdoor, environmental or non-traditional education. You will have a chance to spend an exciting summer along the Potomac River; teaching fishing camps, working with kids and enjoying the outdoors. Interns will learn classroom management skills, natural history, outdoor adventure skills and get a chance to experience the Potomac. 

Requirements:  Ideal candidate will enjoy and have experience working with children, love being outdoors and will be pursuing a degree in Education, Biology, Environmental Science or a related field.

Successful candidates will have freshwater angling experience, working knowledge of fishing equipment, techniques, and handling. Ability to paddle a canoe, kayak, and rowboat preferred; introductory training will be offered.
