Quiz – Sexual Assault

red question mark over white question marksHow much do you know about sexual assault?

There is a lot of misinformation out there about sexual assault, including what it is, who it affects and myths about perpetrators.

Take this short quiz to test your knowledge.

Question 1

In 2016, Virginia had a backlog of 2,665 untested sexual assault forensic exam kits. Today, how big is the backlog?

A. 2,665
B. 529
C. 0

C. 0

In July 2020, Virginia announced it was the seventh state to test its entire backlog. 851 of the tests resulted in DNA profiles that were entered into CODIS, the national combined DNA index system, and 354 of those profiles resulted in “hits,” names sent to local law enforcement for further investigation. Virginia law now requires police to submit kits to the state crime lab within 60 days, and victims can track the progress of testing.

Question 2

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey of persons 12 and over, how much of sexual violence is committed by current or former intimate partners?

A. 1/10
B. 1/3
C. 1/2

B. 1/3

One third of sexual violence is committed by current or former intimate partners. About 20% is committed by strangers, and about 42% by acquaintances or relatives.

Question 3

What organization created and operates the national sexual violence hotline?

A. The Rock
B. RAINN
C. LifeLine

B. RAINN

The national hotline is run by RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. The hotline number is 800-656-4673 and online chat is available at the RAINN website. RAINN receives almost 200,000 calls and chats per year.

Question 4

True or False: Victims usually report sexual assaults to police.

False

Sexual assaults are one of the most under-reported crimes. The 2019 National Crime Victimization Survey found that 34% of rapes and sexual assaults of people 12 or older were reported to police. The rate is even lower for children.

Question 5

True or False: Unlike domestic violence intervention programs, in sexual violence treatment, people who cause harm may be subject to lie detector tests, and treatment is not a set length.

True

Research on sex offender treatment indicates that it can reduce recidivism by 26% to 43%.

Question 6

A YouTube video viewed over 25 million times makes the analogy between obtaining consent for sex and offering someone what?

A. Cheesecake
B. A cup of tea
C. Popcorn
D. Hot chocolate

B. A cup of tea

Please watch it on YouTube if you haven’t. The original video was created by the Thames Valley Police Department in England in 2015.

Question 7

True or False: In Virginia, law enforcement or detention personnel who have sex with detainees, arrestees or inmates are committing a felony.

True

The law was just strengthened as of March 1, 2021, to specify that it covers police, detainees and juveniles.

Question 8

Name the section of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination at federally funded educational institutions, and guides response to sexual violence and harassment at schools.

A. Preamble
B. Title VII
C. Title IX

C. Title IX

While Title IX requirements were rolled back, institutions can surpass those minimum requirements. In addition, Virginia law requires colleges to review reports within 72 hours and to inform victims of rights and services, and employees are required to report information about sexual violence or harassment to the Title IX Coordinator, unless they are providing confidential services or they are the victim.

Question 9

True or False: Nearly half of bisexual women and transgender people are sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.

True

The 2011 CDC NISVS found that 46% of bisexual women were raped in their lifetimes, 2.5 times the rate for heterosexual or lesbian women. 98% of the perpetrators were male. The 2015 US Transgender Survey reported that 47% of transgender people were sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.

Question 10

True or False: In Virginia, sex offenders can be committed to a mental treatment facility after they have served their criminal sentences if officials believe they are at risk to offend again.

True

Almost 300 Virginians are currently held in a mental treatment facility under the Sexually Violent Predator law.

Question 11

In the 2019 Fairfax County Youth Survey, 5% of boys reported that they had been forced to do sexual things with someone they were dating or going out with in the past year. What was the percentage for girls?

A. 5%
B. 13%
C. 29%

B. 13%

13% of girls. In addition, 8% of boys and 19% of girls reported being sexually harassed.

Question 12

True or False: Research consistently demonstrates that sex offender registries reduce sexual assaults.

False

While sex offender registries are popular with the public, there is not clear evidence they reduce sexual assaults. However, there is evidence that registries have negative effects on registrants in terms of job and housing loss, mental health, and violence and harassment against registrants.

Learn more about why the answer to this question is false.

Question 13

True or False: Weapons are often used by those committing sexual assaults.

False

The National Crime Victimization Survey found that offenders used weapons in about 8% of sexual assaults. Offenders often use trust, manipulation, intimidation, threats or physical force rather than weapons.
