Adapted Aquatics Instructor

Position Title: Adapted Aquatics Instructor 
Location: Various Rec Centers in Fairfax County 
Hours: The schedule for this position vary based on class times. Primarily evening and weekend hours. 
Salary: Starts at $21/hour (increases based upon experience and certifications)
Position Type: Part-Time (based on class load)
 
Overview: Adapted Aquatics Instructors provide a special service to our customers, teaching students of all ages and abilities swimming and water safety skills. We offer several unique programs including learn to swim, aquatic exercise, and Special Olympics Swim Team training classes for children, teens, and adults with disabilities. Orientation to our program and shadowing a tenured instructor is required prior to teaching independently.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of work experience serving customers with disabilities. 
  • Must be able to work evening and weekends.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Minimum 1 year of prior teaching experience or extensive swimming background. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Possess a swim instructor certification through an accredited agency or demonstrate extensive swim teaching experience.

Rec-Pac (Inclusion Director) 

Position: Rec Pac (Inclusion Director) 
Location: Multiple locations in Fairfax County, Virginia. 
Hours: Monday-Friday; 8:15am to 4:15pm.
Salary: $19 to $22.25 per hour. Varies based on experience, education, and certifications. 

The Rec Pac Inclusion Director’s roles and responsibilities include:

  • Work with the site staff to ensure all kids in the camp program have the supports and strategies needed to be successful.  
  • Assist with making accommodations to programs during camp to promote positive behaviors and teamwork among all of the kids. 
  • Develop accommodation plans when needed to ensure all kids are set-up for success at their site.  
  • Brainstorm and try creative strategies to problem-solve issues are they arise.  
  • Role model the behaviors for the counselors to include: incentives, breaks, positive praise, rewards, behavior charts, etc.  
  • Promote a positive environment for all staff and kids.
  • Communicate issues, questions, suggestions to your direct reports, Adapted Program Specialist and/or Access and Inclusion Branch Manager.  
  • Work in collaboration with the other Site Director and camp staff as a cohesive team.  
  • Receive training and responsible for administering medications to campers as directed on the authorization form and ensure proper documentation.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Serves as the liaison between counselors and site staff, between the camp and parents, and between the site and Youth Services and Social Services Prepares weekly paperwork, supervises, evaluates, and trains site staff.
  • Responsible for ensuring all Virginia Department of Social Services standards and FCPA regulations are adhered to and in compliance for licensure Ensures health and safety precautions are met.
  • Will make phone calls to parents when necessary and assist staff when disciplinary situations arise. Camp Directors will communicate with parents before and during camp in a written form (email, notes home, etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 250 hours of experience serving customers with disabilities. 
  • Agree to a Criminal Background Check (fingerprint) and a Central Registry Check completed by Child Protective Services (CPS).
  • Provide negative TB test results (Valid for two years).
  • Have or willing to obtain CPR and first aid certification.
  • Have NEVER been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect, exploitation, or other barrier crimes as listed on the Sworn Disclosure Statement of the Criminal Record Check.

We are looking for enthusiastic and creative staff (ages 16 and up), who want to make a positive impact on others, while having fun in the parks, recreation centers, and lakefronts.  

The Inclusion Specialist’s role is to provide support to a child with a disability between the ages of 3-15, to foster successful participation in a camp program. This support varies based on the customer needs and can include any of the following: in-person assistance for the partial or entire duration of a program, to help the child consistently learn the skills needed to participate independently and provide effective communication with parents at the beginning and throughout the program.  

An interested applicant should have volunteer and/or work experience in the following areas of expertise working with individuals with disabilities: special education, recreation management, therapeutic recreation, adapted physical education, occupational or physical therapy, social work, or psychology.

Leisure Coach 

Position: Leisure Coach

Position Type: Part-time

We are looking for enthusiastic and creative staff (ages 18 and up), who want to make a positive impact on others, while having fun in the parks, recreation centers, and lakefronts.  

The Leisure Coach’s primary role is to provide support to a customer with a disability, to foster successful participation in recreation programs.  This support varies based on the customer needs and can include any of the following:  development and implementation of an accommodation plan, outlining needs, strategies, and adaptations, and/or in-person assistance for partial or entire duration of a program to help the customer consistently learn the skills needed to participate independently and provide effective communication with parents at the beginning and throughout the program.  The Leisure Coach also provides training and mentoring for instructors or staff on how to implement these accommodations and adaptations (team effort!).  

Minimum Qualifications:  At least two years of experience in the following areas of expertise working with individuals with disabilities: special education, recreation management, therapeutic recreation, adapted physical education, occupational or physical therapy, social work, or psychology.
