Frying Pan Farm Park

Position Title: Maintenance Worker
Salary: $14-17/hour 
Location: Frying Pan Farm Park, Herndon, VA 
Schedule: 20+ hours per week; days vary and include weekdays, weekends and holidays

Description: Frying Pan Farm Park is a diverse 135 acre park and this position will include working indoors and outdoors. Duties include grounds maintenance to include mowing and landscaping, cleaning classrooms, Visitor Center and restrooms, trash removal, unlocking and locking building for user groups, patrolling park grounds, responding to staff and visitor requests, and helping with special events.

Qualifications:  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Be able to work outdoors in all weather, traverse uneven ground, lift up to 50 pounds and perform general maintenance and custodial work.

Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check. First Aid and CPR/AED certification (offered through Fairfax County) must be completed with 60 days of hire.

Position Title: Farmhand 
Location: Frying Pan Farm Park, Herndon, VA 
Hours:  3-4 days per week, includes weekends; Shifts vary, but work hours between 7am and 6pm
Salary: $13 to $18 per hour depending on certifications and experience, no benefits 

Overview: Work on one of the last working farms in Fairfax County. Frying Pan Farm Park is seeking an eager, enthusiastic Farmhand to join our team! 

Duties: 

  • Daily chores with livestock include feeding, watering, milking and cleaning stalls.  
  • Help with newborn animals and healthcare.  
  • Crop field operations include hay making, small grains and corn production.  
  • The farm is open to the public and interaction with the visitors is an important aspect of the job.
  • Attend offsite outreach and help with special events on site.
  • Farm maintenance to include fence repair and mowing as needed.   


Minimum Qualifications: Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to lift up to 50 pounds, and good customer service.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with livestock, equipment operation and working with the public.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Available to work early August

Outreach and Community Connections Leader

Location: Frying Pan Farm Park 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon, Va 20171
Hours: Part-time, year-round position average of 32 hours a week depending on season and program demand. Includes weekday, weekend, and evening shifts.
Salary: $16-$21hour, dependent on experience. Limited benefits are available. *

Make a difference by connecting the public to Frying Pan Farm Park through interpretive and educational programs, activities and volunteerism. Develop on-site volunteer and outreach opportunities to connect the public to parks. Lead children, teenagers, and adults in a variety of volunteer projects. Requires superior organization and communication abilities and a vision for connecting volunteers to opportunities. This position will also lead field trips, assist with weekend programs and events , drive wagon rides, and assist in the Country Store. Minimum Qualifications: College degree or experience equivalent, programming experience with different age groups (including elementary school aged and adults), experience and knowledge base regarding nature and cultural resources, experience creating interpretive materials (lesson plans, fliers, signage, etc.), valid driver’s license/ good driving record, proficient with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint programs.

Preferred Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in natural, life, or physical sciences, natural history, education, or a closely related field and six months’ experience creating and presenting interpretive programs for children ages 2-12 years old. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to deal effectively with citizen inquiries and questions. Experience working in a public park and operating park facilities, buildings, etc., leading park tours, and with outreach and promotion/advertising. Experience driving cart vehicles, public safety issues, and have First Aid and CPR training. Experience with Scout groups and invasive plant management.

Special Requirements: Must be able to lift 40 pounds, work outside, and work evenings and weekends. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background, Child Protective Services Registry, driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Weekend and Evening Front Desk Staff

Salary: $15-19/hour, no benefits
Location: Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center, Herndon, VA
Schedule:

  • Actual scheduled hours will vary based on needed class coverage and booked rental times. 3-4 evenings per week.  Some Saturday or Sunday daytime coverage as needed.
  • Evening front desk coverage: may run between 5:30-9:30pm Mondays – Thursdays
  • Evening rental coverage: Friday & Saturday nights between the hours of 4:30pm-12:30am and Sundays between 4:30pm - 10:30pm.
  • Weekend Daytime Front Desk Coverage: Saturdays from 9:00am – 5:00pm & Sundays from 10:30am – 5:00pm
  • Available for major park events that require full staff involvement.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the initial point of visitor contact for walk-in and phone inquiries at Frying Pan Farm Park. This position requires a self-motivated, independent worker with good interpersonal communication skills, the ability to multitask in a busy environment, and the ability to prioritize workload. This is a great fit for a second job or to work around a school schedule. Training provided.
  • Assists customers with questions. Processes class registrations. Schedules rentals. Monitors rentals and evening classes and ensures compliance with facility rules. Routine cleaning & maintenance of facility as needed. Works at site special events. Performs administrative, marketing and research tasks as assigned.
  • Rental position duties include preparing the building for rental and setting up sound/projector if needed before customer arrives, checking customer in and reviewing the facility rules. Monitor compliance during the rental and checking renters out and inspecting the facility after rental ends. May include light maintenance – emptying trash and tidying restrooms during rental.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be 21 years (minimum age) or older and possess a valid driver’s license.  Must be able to lift 30 pounds unassisted or 55 pounds assisted. Proficient in Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel.  Must hear, see, speak and communicate fluently in English.

Special Requirements: Will be required to pass a background check and driver’s license check.  First Aid and CPR required within 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in customer service and/or rental facility.  First Aid and CPR certification.  Multilingual (in English and other languages).

Visitor Services Assistant

Position Overview

Frying Pan Farm Park is seeking a Visitor Services Assistant to provide exceptional customer service and support across at the Visitor Center and Country Store. This role is the first point of contact for guests and plays a key part in creating a welcoming and informative experience. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, dependable, and enjoys working in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate the park’s POS system and process payments accurately.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource on park programs, events, and offerings.
  • Provide evening support for Visitor Center classes as needed.
  • Assist with setting up and crowd management for weekly concerts and special events.
  • Perform administrative tasks and light housekeeping duties.
  • Handle store revenue responsibly, including cash handling, drawer reconciliation, ticket management, and deposit delivery.
  • Manage Country Store inventory, pricing, and creative merchandising.
  • Operate the carousel and wagon rides after completing required training.
  • Informs and educates public about FCPA mission, site rules and regulations, responds and documents incidents or emergencies

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older with a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. unassisted or 55 lbs. assisted.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum one year of experience in customer service, administrative support, and cash handling or retail.

Green Spring Gardens

Position Title: Part-time Gardner
Location: Green Spring Garden; 4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria, VA 22312
Hours: Year-round, part-time work Monday through Friday with some weekends and holidays re-quired. 
Salary: $17.44-$19.50 per hour, depending on experience and certifications.  

Overview: 
Green Spring Gardens is currently seeking an enthusiastic, self-driven individual to join our team as a Gardener! A Gardener performs all levels of garden and grounds maintenance required to maintain the highest aesthetic standards throughout the property.

Duties: 

  • Weeding and cleaning bedding areas
  • Watering as needed and directed
  • Mulching
  • Planting seasonal flowers and woody plants. Deadheading and cutting back plants as necessary
  • Pruning evergreen and deciduous shrubs and flowering trees
  • Propagation work to include cuttings, sowing seeds, potting up
  • Operating and maintaining equipment and vehicles safely
  • Working under the direction of full-time horticulturists
  • Directing the work of volunteers and summer interns

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College coursework in horticulture, botany, ecology or landscape design or Master Gardener certificate or work experience in public garden setting.
  • Basic gardening and garden maintenance skills are required but a passion for gardening is equally important.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather, with exposure to insects, heat and cold. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Familiarity with tools, including pruners, saws, blowers, weeders and edgers. Experience working with volunteers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificate in landscape design or horticulture.
  • Knowledge of plants of the mid-Atlantic.
  • Basic gardening and garden maintenance skills are required but a passion for gardening is equally important.
  • Able to lead groups of volunteers in completing garden tasks.
  • Looking for a self-starter who can begin assignments without prompting and plan and organize work in the gardens.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Riverbend Park

  • Additional 2 years of experience beyond minimum.
  • Experience scheduling or managing programs.
  • Certified interpretive guide certification.

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in natural, life, or physical sciences, natural history, education or closely related field and 1 year of experi-ence presenting interpretive programs or teaching children.

Duties:

  • Instructor will teach, evaluate, and provide feedback on paddling and safety skills for participants of all ages and abilities.
  • Provide outstanding, safe, and educational experience to participant’s on-land and water.
  • Monitor paddling environment conditions for the safety of participants, staff, and other water users.
  • Follow program outlines for expectations and outcomes.
  • Prepare and inspect personal and group equipment, before and after use.

Position Title: Natural Resource/Maintenance Staff

Title: Outdoor Education Intern

Description: Spend a summer on the river! Riverbend Park is FCPA’s only staffed riverfront park. Riverbend offers diverse summer programming, including summer camps for campers age 4-15, family programs, and outdoor recreation classes. Outdoor education interns will assist park naturalists and summer camp teachers in leading various camp programs at Riverbend Park and other Fairfax County Park Authority sites as needed.  Interns will gain experience working with children and teens, while learning and developing outdoor, educational, interpretive, and leadership skills. You will be responsible for communication with campers, and their families and FCPA staff while, maintaining a safe and fun environment. This internship is an excellent opportunity for someone with an interest in outdoor, environmental or non-traditional education.

Requirements:  Must enjoy and have enthusiasm for working with children and stewardship.  College students or graduates preferably with major in Education, Biology, Environmental Science, or Parks and Recreation.  Successful candidates will also demonstrate the ability to carry out assigned tasks, communicate orally and in writing to all staff and emergency personnel. Experience working with children and participating in outdoor recreation or environmental science preferred.

Ability to communicate boating information effectively. This is a physically demanding job and staff must be able to complete all duties.  

Preferred Qualifications: Canoeing, kayaking, or boating experience. Lifeguard experience, Virginia Boating license a plus but not a requirement. American Canoe Association Certification and/or similar credentials.

Certificates and Licenses Required: Motor vehicle operator’s license with good driving record. First Aid/CPR/AED certification must be completed within 2 weeks of hire (may be provided by Fairfax Co.). Virginia Boating Safety License (Within 30 days of employment).

About Scott’s Run Nature Preserve: Scott’s Run Nature Preserve has close to 400 acres of forested land in the Potomac Gorge and is Fairfax County’s natural resource jewel. It features unique plants and geologic features that attract people from all over the region. The position will be directed by the Natural Resource Manager and the Park Manager at Riverbend Park.   • Assist with surveys, plantings, and other natural resource projects.
