Aquatics Instructor

Position Title: Aquatics Instructor – Learn to Swim

Location: Various Rec Centers

Hours: The schedule for this position varies. This position primarily supports the evening and weekend shifts. 

SALARY: Starts at $21.64/hour (increases based upon experience and certifications)

POSITION TYPE: Part-Time (Based on class load)

Overview: Swim Instructors provide a special service to our customers, providing students of all ages and skill level various skill sets and competencies. We offer programs for parents and children as well as the dependent beginner to the advanced independent fitness swimmer.  Orientation to our program is required; shadowing a tenured instructor is also required prior to teaching our programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Prior teaching experience or extensive swimming background.

Preferred Qualifications: 

A certified swim instructor through an accredited agency and/or be certified in the specialty you plan on teaching OR demonstrated extensive swim teaching experience.

Personal Trainer I

Position Title: Personal Trainer I

Location: Multiple locations in Fairfax County, Va.

Hours: 1-19 hours per week; varied schedule to include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Overview: To develop safe and effective program design, instruction and implementation of exercise and fitness programs to clients based on industry standards.  Motivate and coach individuals/groups by designing and delivering personalized fitness plans.

Duties Include:

  • Design, plan, adapt and implement a safe and effective workout program addressing individual’s assessment and goals.
  • Promote and market classes and programs to clients and to the general public.
  • Adapt exercise prescription to the individual need of participants.

Fitness Instructor

Hours:

Duties Include:

  • Prevents accidents and drownings and performs rescue and emergency care as needed.  Ensures the health and safety of individuals in the pool/spa, locker rooms, and surrounding areas through enforcement of park policies, pool/spa rules, and local health department regulations, as well as application of safety standards and pool surveillance (10/20 rule).
  • Performs daily cleaning and maintenance duties relating to the pool/spa, locker rooms, and surrounding areas as well as equipment associated with these areas.
  • Provides excellent customer service.  Assists patrons daily with lost and found, locker problems, phone calls, questions, etc., daily.
  • Administers First Aid to public and staff as needed.
  • Maintains water and rescue skills at “test ready” levels through required in-service training and attendance at monthly staff meetings.
  • Participates in set-up, breakdown, and cleaning associated with special events and rentals held in the pool area.
  • Completes other duties and tasks assigned by Head Guard, supervisor, or Duty Manager, as well as assists Park staff with other site operations and events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to apply.
  • Applicants are required to pass a lifeguard certification course, which is provided at no cost.
  • Course prerequisites include:
  • Swim 100 yards continuously using a front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Retrieve a 10-pound dive brick from the deepest part of the facility’s pool.
  • Tread water without hands for one minute.

Head & Assistant Swim Team Coaches

Position Title: Head & Assistant Swim Team Coaches
Location: Various Rec Centers throughout Fairfax County. 
Hours: Part-Time; Mon, Tue & Thurs 5:45 P.M. - 7:15 P.M., Friday Evenings 5:00 P.M. - 8:30 P.M.

Overview: The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) provides quality facilities and services which offers
residents’ opportunities for recreation to improve their physical and mental well-being, and enhancement of their quality of life. Summer Swim Team coaches provide a special service to our customers, providing athletes ages 6 to 13 years old an introduction to the competitive side of swimming in a fun and safe manner. Our Summer Swim League has teams at all 9 Fairfax County Rec Centers with practices starting Tuesday May 31st and meeting Mon-day, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Swim Meets are Friday evenings starting June 17th and ending on July 22nd.

As a Summer Swim Coach, you are responsible for, but not limited to the following:

  • Develop workouts for maximum swimmer performance in sprint-based swim meets.
  • Lead practices for swimmers ranging in age from 6-14 at all levels of ability.
  • Provide instruction and feedback on stroke, turn, start, and finish techniques for all levels of swim ability.
  • Mentor & Manage assistant coaches, team instructors, and parent volunteers.
  • Attend all team related events and activities (daily practices, time trials, competitive and developmental meets, social events, pep rallies and team building events).
  • Coordinate team-building activities.
  • Work productively and effectively with League Manager, Rec Center Director, team parents, and lifeguards.

Skills: 

  • Demonstrate a passion for swimming and teaching.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with a variety of ability, personality, and fitness levels.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible to teaching space/environment and different learning styles.
  • Ability to receive constructive criticism and feedback from customers as well as supervisor.
  • Flexible with an ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Previous experience as a Head Coach or Senior Assistant Coach for a swim team.
  • Strong teaching, mentoring and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to motivate a team.
  • Experience with and passion for working with children of all ages and ability levels.
  • Effective communication, organization, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coaches, Team Representatives, and parents.
  • Knowledge of NVSL and USA Swimming rules.
  • Experience in seeding meets is a plus.

Maintenance Worker

Position Title: Maintenance Worker
Location: Cub Run Recreation Center and Park; 4630 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly, VA. 
Hours: Shifts include evenings, weekends, day and night. 
Salary: $13.00 per hour. 

Overview: Cub Run recreation Center and Park seeks to hire one to four energetic individuals who will work hard and follow prescribed policies and procedures to maintain the recreation center and park in order to improve the safety, functionality and appearance of the recreation center.

Duties Include: 

  • Removing and disposing of trash and debris.
  • Custodial work to include dusting, mopping, sweeping, shining, etc.
  • Room set-up and breakdown for parties, classes, and other events. 
  • Wipe down tables, fitness equipment and other areas as needed.  
  • Restocking supplies (paper towels, toilet paper, soaps)
  • Cleaning locker rooms, restrooms, floors, and windows.

  • Ability to perform medium to heavy labor.

  • Must be able to work alone and with others depending upon the nature of assignments, be adaptable, maintain positive interactions with all park staff, volunteers, and visitors, and demonstrate follow through on assignments.

  • 1 to 5 yrs. of custodial or/and customer service experience.

Duties Include:

  • Ensures the safe and effective operation of the Rec Center. Early shift opens the Rec Center, preparing it for members and staff. Closing shift closes and secures the Rec Center at the end of each day.

  • Ensures Rec Center is well maintained and kept in safe conditions.

  • Serves as the primary contact point for Rec Center customers. Provides verbal and written information and directions relating to facilities, programs, picnic area use, trails, natural and cultural resources, and other topics.
  • Stays up to date on Park Authority Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, state and county laws, and other pertinent guidance.
  • Note’s safety/security and maintenance concerns, addresses them where feasible, and reports to supervisor using appropriate methods and recordkeeping.
  • Responds on behalf of the Park Authority in potential and actual emergency situations occurring on site while on duty.
  • Completes special projects and tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. 
  • Be able to lift up to 25 pounds and perform general maintenance and custodial work. 
  • Must be personable, punctual, dependable, and self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience. 
  • Extensive customer service experience. 
  • Experience dealing effectively with emergencies and other difficult situations.

Overview: Franconia Rec Center and Park is seeking four self-motivated, hardworking individuals to work as a part-time maintenance worker. This position helps maintain Franconia Rec Center and Park in order to uphold a high level of cleanliness and safety. 

Duties Include: Under the supervisor of merit and seasonal staff, the maintenance worker is responsible for the removing and disposing of trash and debris, custodial work (dusting, mopping, sweeping, shining, etc.), room set-ups and breakdowns, wiping down tables, fitness equipment and other areas as needed. The maintenance worker also assists staff with monitoring the gymnasium during open play, gym rentals, cleaning, and assisting customers. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Ability to perform medium to heavy labor.  
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. 
  • Must be able to work alone and with others depending upon the nature of assignments, be adaptable, maintain positive interactions with all park staff, volunteers, and visitors, and demonstrate follow through on assignments.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 1 year of custodial or/and customer service experience.

Overview: The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) provides quality facilities and services which offer resident’s opportunities for recreation to improvement their physical and mental well-being, as well as the enhancement of their quality of life. In order to increase the quality of Oak Marr Rec Center and its facilities, Oak Marr Rec Center has opened a Drop-in daycare program available to parents/guardians using the building services. 

We are currently looking to add a new staff member to our team to help with Weekday mornings, Evenings and Saturdays. The Drop–in Child Care Center Attendants are the frontline customer service employees for the Child Care room. As a Child Care staff member, you are responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Maintain a safe and sanitary environment for children in the daycare room daily.

  • Promote and market classes and programs to clients and to the general public.

  • Serves as the primary contact point for Rec Center customers. Provides verbal and written information and directions relating to facilities and programs. 
  • Stays up to date on Park Authority Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, state and coun-ty laws, and other pertinent guidance.
  • Note’s safety/security and maintenance concerns, addresses them where feasible, and reports to supervi-sor using appropriate methods and recordkeeping.
  • Responds on behalf of the Park Authority in potential and actual emergency situations occurring on site while on duty.
  • Completes special projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Helps to set up and take down rooms for rentals-including putting up tables and chairs, moving equipment out of rooms, when necessary, etc.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Be able to lift to 25 pounds and perform general maintenance and custodial work. 
  • Must be personable, punctual, dependable, and self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Supervisory experience.

  • CPR/First Aid Training.
