Overview

The Fairfax Circuit Court serves the residents of Fairfax County and Fairfax City. The Fairfax Circuit Court (19th Judicial Circuit) is the trial court of general jurisdiction and is the largest trial court in Virginia, composed of fifteen full-time trial judges. It has authority to try a full range of cases, both civil and criminal, jury, and non-jury. Civil cases include a wide variety of business disputes, personal injury, and domestic relations cases. Criminal cases include felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic cases.

Job duties include:

  • Legal research and writing, including drafting legal memoranda and letter opinions.
  • Attend Friday Civil Motions hearings and other trials.
  • Review orders for legal compliance.
  • Assist other judges. Law clerks primarily work for one judge; however, they will provide help to other judges throughout the year.
  • Interact with attorneys, pro se litigants, and other members of the public.
  • Other duties as assigned, including special projects and preparation of CLE materials.
