Frequently Asked Questions

The center, originally constructed in 1977, would be replaced with a new building to address infrastructure challenges, improve accessibility, and better meet the evolving recreational, fitness, and wellness needs of the community.

The Fairfax County Park Authority has several goals with the construction of a new Audrey Moore Rec Center, including:

  • Develop a state-of-the-art accessible recreation center that serves as a welcoming community hub, supports a wide range of recreational, wellness, and
    social opportunities and varying abilities.
  • Expand and enhance the fitness center to serve a larger and more diverse customer base, including beginners, young adults, active older adults, and
    specialized fitness users.
  • Provide a unique aquatics experience that attracts new customers while better meeting the needs of children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
  • Increase program space to address the growing demand for traditional recreation programs while supporting the community’s expanding range of interests and activities.
  • Maximize flexible, multi-use spaces that can accommodate a variety of programs and activities, allowing the center to serve the greatest number of customers possible now and well into the future.

Audrey Moore Rec Center was originally constructed in 1977 and was the first rec center created by Fairfax County Park Authority. Because of the facility’s age, it faces significant operational, efficiency and maintenance issues. The construction of a new Audrey Moore Rec Center will address infrastructure challenges, improve accessibility, and better meet the evolving recreational, fitness, and wellness needs of the community.

Audrey Moore Rec Center will close in late Spring 2028 prior to construction and is planned to reopen in late Spring 2031. Programs, including camps, will be relocated to nearby park facilities and recreation centers whenever possible. Additional details will be shared in advance to help participants plan accordingly.

All rec center members already have access to all 9 rec centers and will be welcome to use Providence and South Run Rec Centers, the two closest, during construction, in addition to programming in nearby park facilities.

Outdoor amenities will remain open unless construction activities impact the safety of users. Access to parking areas may be limited or modified during construction.

Community input will help ensure that the new Audrey Moore Rec Center is a thriving destination for recreation, a magnet for community-building, and a resource that meets residents’ needs.

The Fairfax County Park Authority began to engage the community with a survey on Audrey Moore Rec Center. Conducted in 2021 and 2022, the survey generated comments on desired features for the renovated facility. At the May 2 public meeting, the Park Authority will gather additional input. The design concept will also be posted on the Park Authority’s website, where community members can provide feedback by visiting New Audrey Moore Rec Center Building.

A full tear-down and new build provides a more predictable construction timeline and a known budget.

The renovated center is expected to include modernized and expanded fitness spaces, updated aquatics facilities, a warm water pool, enhanced community and expanded multipurpose rooms, and improved accessibility features.

The project is proposed to be funded through a voter-approved bond in November 2026, along with other general funds.
