Seasonal Position Descriptions

Position Title: Patriot Park North, Manager on Duty (MOD)
Location: 5425 Willow Springs School Road, Fairfax VA 22030 
Hours: Core Hours: Friday 5:00-11:00pm, Saturday 7:00am-11:00pm, Sunday 7:00am -11:00pm. Occasional Hours: Monday - Thursday 5:00-11:00pm
Salary: Starting at $15.40, depending on experience. – No benefits

Overview: Act as onsite staff during FCPA diamond sports tournaments. 

Duties Include:     

  • Ensures the safe and effective operation of the park. Early shift opens the administrative side of the park, preparing it for Tournament Organizers. Closing shift closes and secures the park at the end of each day.
  • Works with Site maintenance staff, providing communication and feedback with Tournament organizers.
  • Ensures Park is well maintained and kept in safe conditions.
  • May perform routine maintenance and custodial tasks to include sanitizing high touch surface areas, emp-tying trash cans, and cleaning restrooms and other areas.
  • Provides excellent customer service, greets Tournament Organizers, assists customers in resolving issues or concerns.
  • Performs administrative work as needed.
  • Takes initiative to increase one's knowledge of the park operations, its facilities, programs, services, and resources.
  • Serves as the primary contact point for Tournament Organizers. Provides verbal and written information and directions relating to the facility.
  • Stays up to date on Park Authority Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, state and county laws, and other pertinent guidance.
  • Note’s safety/security and maintenance concerns, addresses them where feasible, and reports to supervisor using appropriate methods and recordkeeping.
  • Responds on behalf of the Park Authority to potential and actual emergency situations occurring on site while on duty.
  • Completes special projects and tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Agree to a Criminal Background Check (fingerprint)
  • Have or willing to obtain CPR and first aid certification.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Be able to lift up to 25 pounds and perform general maintenance and custodial work.
  • Must be personable, punctual, dependable, and self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Extensive customer service experience.
  • Experience dealing effectively with emergencies and other difficult situations.

Position Title: Restoration Ecologist (part-time, year-round) (benefits eligible) 
Location: Herrity Building, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Va. 22035. 
Hours: This is a part-time year-round position working an average of 30 hours per week. 
Salary: $34.88 to $46.50 per hour. 
 

Overview: The Natural Resources Branch of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) seeks an ecosystem resto-ration project manager to manage projects within the agency’s countywide ecological restoration program.  The position is 1560 hours per year (part time) and includes medical insurance.  The ecological restoration program is titled Helping Our Land Heal (HOLH) and has worked to restore and manage natural capital assets on FCPA land since 2012 including forests, grasslands and wetlands.  The program emphasizes community level restoration of highly degraded systems to re-build ecosystem function and biological diversity, and to support conservation of natural resources at broader scales. This position will function as a technical support to the team to design, plan, permit, implement and monitor eco-system restoration projects under the direction of the HOLH program manager. The position will have both office and field responsibilities and may supervise field personnel and volunteers.  Field work will be conducted year-round as needed based on project requirements in addition to planning activities and administrative duties.  The position is expected to work both independently and as part of the restoration team, as well as the staff of other programs within the Natural Resource Branch and the wider agency as a whole.

 

This position will be responsible to carry out the following tasks:

  • Apply principles of restoration ecology and wildlife biology to scope and assess need for ecosystem restoration in park natural areas.
  • Review scientific literature, plans, legal code and existing datasets to support planning and design processes.
  • Collect field data to analyze existing conditions, forest metrics, vegetation, monitor results of treatments, survival surveys, and similar studies.
  • Utilize GIS to support all aspects of ecosystem restoration projects including collecting field data; reviewing and analyzing geospatial datasets; editing and managing data; creating maps for plans, reports and communications.
  • Consult with agency staff and external partners regarding project goals, plans, implementation, stakeholder engagement and other activities.
  • Develop and write project plans, permit applications and progress reports.
  • Ensure project compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Prepare presentations and present project information to stakeholders.
  • Review and provide oversight of restoration treatments including detailed specifications on plantings, seedings, timber stand improvements, invasive species management, etc.
  • Carry out implementation activities directly or through contracted services including activities such as vegetation management, herbivory control, planting, seeding, prescribed burning, etc.
  • Supervise and perform quality control of contracted services.  Solicit, negotiate and administer contracts for vegetation management, engineering services, plantings, and a wide variety of other activities.
  • Assess results of treatments and adjust plans, schedules and budgets as needed.
  • Accurately document site visits and all related site work occurring both internal and externally.
  • Coordinate and lead groups of staff and/or volunteers in project activities and occasionally provide education-al programs.  
  • Communicate technical and semi-technical issues to park users and members of the public about project and program activities.
  • Participate in the prescribed fire program.
     

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in ecology, forestry, biology, botany, zoology, geography, environmental science, natural resource management or related field; plus
  • Two years of experience in terrestrial ecosystem assessment and management, data analysis and reporting, bioassessments (vegetative communities, wildlife) using standard protocols, and assessments of terrestrial habitat conditions.
  • Hold a Virginia Certified Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator License or have the ability to obtain one within one year of appointment. 
     

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in ecology, biology, botany, forestry, geography, natural resources, wildlife, environmental science, or related field.
  • Experience in ecological restoration and natural resource management.
  • Experience or certifications related to prescribed fire or wildland fire.
  • Ability to identify the plant species of Northern Virginia.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.
  • Hold a CDL or ability to obtain one within one year of hire.
  • Hold a Virginia Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator License with a category 2 (Forest Pest Control).
     

Note: *This position is scheduled to work a minimum 1,040 hours and no more than a maximum of 1,560 hours in a calendar year. This position is eligible to receive limited benefits, including: Medical/Vision/Dental Insurance Coverage, Flexible Spending Program, and Deferred Compensation.

Position Title: Safety Analyst Assistant (Safety Analyst I)

Hours: This is a year-round part-time position averaging 30 hours per week. 
Salary: $30.00 - $40.00

This position cannot exceed 1,560 hours per calendar year.

Overview: The Safety Analyst Assistant supports the Park Authority Safety Manager to ensure compliance with all applicable safety and health laws and regulations; and performs related work as required. Assists with DriveCam administration, claims management processes, maintaining safety calendars and databases and tracking and reporting related to safety training administration. Responsible for the maintenance of the Safety Office SharePoint page and updating safety documents for agency use. Provides ad hoc reporting as needed.
 

Duties Include: 

  • DriveCam Administration: The incumbent will complete an initial evaluation of DriveCam events, identifying events of note that will require further action by the safety office. Track individual driver and site performance metrics, making recommendations for safety office intervention to address negative trends or improper driving behaviors. Compile and evaluate monthly KPIs and submit reports and recommendations to the Safety Manager. Schedule, prepare and present data to the DriveCam Safety Committee.
  • Safety Information Management: The incumbent will support the maintenance of safety databases, including the Audit findings tracker, AIMS asset management database, workplace injuries and illnesses for 300 log reporting, citizen injury claim databases, property loss and behavior incident report databases, and CAPRA accreditation evidence documents. Ensures databases are kept up to date on a regular schedule and produces reports as needed. Assists with maintaining the Safety Office intranet page.
  • Safety Training Administration: The incumbent will assist with the coordination of the FCPA Employee Safe-ty Training program, including required annual OSHA trainings, annual equipment training and competent person certifications, and tracking agency safety training compliance. Coordinates with third-party safety training providers and maintains training records and vendor payments.
  • Claims management: The incumbent will support agency staff in submitting claims and assisting in the in-take and processing of property loss and employee and citizen injury claims. Reviews injury and incident reports, supports division staff with required documentation, record management, tracking of claims progress, and claims database management and reporting.
  • Safety Program Calendar Administration: The incumbent will proactively manage all aspects of the Annual Safety Office Calendar, including maintaining the Safety Audit Calendar, DriveCam Committee Meeting Calendar, CPR training Calendar, division safety training calendar, joint public safety and FCPA meetings, and additional miscellaneous calendar items. Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Sedentary with walking and lifting less than 25 pounds.
  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in safety sciences, industri-al hygiene, safety management, loss prevention or closely related field.

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Strong database management skills
