The Lovejoygroup is a versatile ensemble serving up energetic jazz, funky blues and smooth Latin rhythms. Karen Lovejoy, vocalist and bandleader, fronts the group. The Lovejoy Group understands that it’s all about that groove! Jerrold Allen is pianist and musical director of the group. His knowledge and background has allowed the group to continually expand their musical reach. Saxophonist Herb Smith adds his sweet sound to the mix. He has played with some of the greats including Phineas Newborn, Clark Terry and Webster Young. This jazz historian keeps the group grounded in the tradition. Drummer Lawrence Dean has supported the East Coast jazz scene since the 90’s. His rhythms are always solid yet intricate, adding body and texture to the music. In performance the Lovejoy name rings true. Her warm stage presence and harmonious tone resonates a kind of joy that leaves the music always hopeful. Lovejoy knows that the blues is an integral part of jazz and will frequently add a twist of down home blues to her repertoire. The group has produced a number of original tunes including the title cut for the groups latest CD, Spellbound. The Lovejoygroup has won a number of awards including, most recently, the Jazz Jammie Award. Each member brings a wealth of experience to the collective.
