Sully Historic Site Field Trips/Outreach

Reservation Information:

  • For assistance including creating a reservation, a reservation for a date less than two weeks in advance or questions, please contact us via email at morgan.kelley@fairfaxcounty.gov or call 703-437-1794.
  • Programs are available Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from September until June.  If staffing allows, programs may be scheduled on select afternoons.
  • Most field trip programs can be tailored to meet the needs of pre-school through sixth grades with advance notice.

  • Attire: Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are necessary. There is walking outdoors among buildings.
  • Please call 703-437-1794 or email morgan.kelley@fairfaxcounty.gov with questions or concerns, especially regarding inclusion or ESL classes, or schools with more than two classes.
  • Lunch: There are uncovered, outdoor picnic tables available for lunch. Please note that Sully has few bathrooms, so school groups should wet wipes or other ways for students for hand washing.

Field Trip Information

Discover how different people at Sully Historic Site and in Fairfax County experienced the Civil War. Students will interpret primary sources such as letters, maps, and historical objects and spaces as evidence to understand how the war impacted both soldiers and civilians, free and enslaved.

Step into the past and discover the diverse lives of early Virginians. Students will interact with historical spaces, letters, and maps to make connections between the Colonial and New Nation periods, allowing them to better understand what life was like for the many different communities at Sully Historic Site and in early Virginia.

Students will explore historic Virginia by learning how people lived during the 19th century. Students will create a timeline of Sully’s story using historic and contemporary documents and maps, compare 19th century and modern life by touring historic buildings, and examine historic artifacts.
