Alert:
Crossroads Interim Park
On September 28, 2019, community leaders gathered to celebrate the opening of Crossroads Interim Park in Bailey’s Crossroads, Virginia. The park is a joint project of the Fairfax County Park Authority and several county agencies, including the Department of Planning and Development-Community Revitalization Section, Facilities Management Division, Department of Economic Initiatives, and Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.
The 2.94-acre site is owned by the Board of Supervisors and became vacant in December 2018 following demolition of Bailey’s Crossroads International Center building. The vacant lot in an urban revitalization area offered a tangible opportunity to achieve several goals expressed in the Bailey’s Crossroads future vision and the County’s Economic Success Strategic Plan. The redevelopment project embodies the future vision to transform the already vibrant commercial and retail center into a walkable, mixed-use center.
The interim park along Columbia Pike includes space for active and passive recreation and will be able to support seasonal and temporary uses while plans are made for its eventual redevelopment. The plaza incorporates unique paving, native vegetation, colorful outdoor seating options, and shade sails. There is a grassy, open play area adjacent to the plaza space, and part of the parking lot has been designated for flexible and seasonal use, such as food trucks, a mobile farmer’s market or a small outdoor festival. The park, which was constructed for $125,000, is expected to be in place for at least five years. The community can reserve the park space by contacting Park Services at FCPAParkPermits@fairfaxcounty.gov or visit the Permits page
