Aquatics

Position Title: Lifeguard

Overview: The Fairfax County Park Authority is hiring enthusiastic, responsible, friendly, communicators dedicated to providing outstanding customer service, all while maintaining the highest level of safety for our customers and staff.

Location: Mount Vernon Rec Center, 2017 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria, Virginia. 

Hours: 

  • Opening and midday shift times vary between 6am to 4pm.
  • Weekday evenings shift times vary between 4pm to 9:30pm.
  • Weekend shift times vary between 7:30am to 7pm.

Salary: 

  • Weekday opening and midday positions start at $15.00 per hour.
  • Weekday evenings and weekend positions rage from $12.41 to $14.00 per hour.

Duties Include:

  • Prevents accidents and drownings and performs rescue and emergency care as needed.  Ensures the health and safety of individuals in the pool/spa, locker rooms, and surrounding areas through enforcement of park policies, pool/spa rules, and local health department regulations, as well as application of safety standards and pool surveillance (10/20 rule).
  • Performs daily cleaning and maintenance duties relating to the pool/spa, locker rooms, and surrounding areas as well as equipment associated with these areas.
  • Provides excellent customer service.  Assists patrons daily with lost and found, locker problems, phone calls, questions, etc., daily.
  • Administers First Aid to public and staff as needed.
  • Maintains water and rescue skills at “test ready” levels through required in-service training and attendance at monthly staff meetings.
  • Participates in set-up, breakdown, and cleaning associated with special events and rentals held in the pool area.
  • Completes other duties and tasks assigned by Head Guard, supervisor, or Duty Manager, as well as assists Park staff with other site operations and events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to apply.
  • Applicants are required to pass a lifeguard certification course, which is provided at no cost.
  • Course prerequisites include:
  • Swim 100 yards continuously using a front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Retrieve a 10-pound dive brick from the deepest part of the facility’s pool.
  • Tread water without hands for one minute.

Overview: To lead safe and effective aqua exercise classes to participants.  Work involves responsibility for class design, planning, and conduct, as well as maintenance of fitness class equipment.

Duties Include:

  • Designs, plans, and leads safe and effective aqua group exercise classes.
  • Promotes and markets classes and programs to the general public.
  • Adapts exercise prescription to the individual need of participants.
  • Updates and maintains certifications as required.
  • Responds responsibly to emergency situations; reports any unusual problems or events to supervisor, and maintains records as required.
  • Inspects facility and equipment for safety hazards, deficiencies, and cleanliness.
  • Completes administrative tasks, including attendance records, teaching availability requests, and participant evaluations.
  • Assists with set-up, operation, and breakdown of classes.
  • Assists with conduct of department special events.
  • Establishes an environment that promotes the enjoyment of physical activity.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Sixteen years old or older.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Current Aquatic Exercise Instructor certification.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to engage in physical activity.

Overview: Swim Instructors provide a special service to our customers, providing students of all ages and skill level various skill sets and competencies. We offer programs for parents and children as well as the dependent beginner to the advanced independent fitness swimmer.  Orientation to our program is required; shadowing a tenured instructor is also required prior to teaching our programs.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Prior teaching experience or extensive swimming background.

Preferred Qualifications: 

A certified swim instructor through an accredited agency and/or be certified in the specialty you plan on teaching OR demonstrated extensive swim teaching experience.

Position: Fitness Instructor

Overview: The newly renovated Mt. Vernon Rec Center needs Personal Trainers to lead safe and effective personal training sessions for members. In addition to the two-story fitness center complete with a functional training area, other amenities include two ice rinks, a rock wall, an indoor track, and a pool with beach entry. A preferred qualification for candidates is the ability to teach strength based, HIIT, or other group fitness classes. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current nationally recognized Personal Training certification which meets Standard Operating Policy criteria. 
  • Current CPR and first aid certification, or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
  • Complete all mandatory county trainings.
  • Ability to engage in physical activity.

Ice

Position Title: Ice Rink Drvier
Location: Mount Vernon Rec Center, 2017 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria, Virginia. 

Hours: 

  • Opening and weekend daytime shift times vary between 5am to 2pm.
  • Weekday and weekend evening shift times vary between 2pm to 12am or later.

Salary: 

  • Part-time positions range from $15.00 to $20.00 per hour.

Duties Include:

  • Ensures the health and safety of individuals on the ice skating surface by providing proper ice resurfacing techniques, safe and clean conditions in the ice arena, warming room, and surrounding areas through enforcement of park policies, ice skating rules, and local health department regulations, on-ice surveillance, as well as application of site safety standards.
  • Documents ice operations systems data and ice cut information.
  • Performs daily maintenance to the ice resurfacer machines, edger, skate sharpener and other tools used for ice operations.
  • Performs daily maintenance to the ice skating surfaces by taking measurements, resurfacing and edging.
  • Performs daily cleaning and maintenance duties relating to the ice arena, warming room, skate rental, team rooms, sharpening room, resurfacer bays and surrounding areas as well as equipment associated with these areas.
  • Provides excellent customer service. Assists patrons daily with lost and found, locker problems, skate rental, skate sharpening, phone calls, questions, etc.
  • Administers First Aid to public and staff as needed.
  • Supervises Rink Guard staff. Perform Rink Guard duties as needed.
  • Maintains ice resurfacing skills and ice operations knowledge at ready levels through required in-service training and attendance at monthly staff meetings.
  • Participates in set-up, breakdown, and cleaning associated with special events and rentals held in the ice arena area.
  • Participates in the ice removal and reinstallation process of the ice surface.
  • Completes other duties and tasks assigned by Ice Operations Manager, Head Ice Resurfacer Operator, Supervisor or Duty Manager, as well as assists Park staff with other site operations and events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
  • Valid Driver’s License and less than six demerits on driving record. 
  • Interview to assess ice operations knowledge 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50-pounds (ex: hockey goals).

Position Title: Child Care Center Attendant 
Location: Mount Vernon Rec Center, 2017 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria, Virginia. 
Hours: The Child Care Center is scheduled to be open on the below dates. Shifts will vary during the operational times.  
Salary: $16.87 to $19.75 per hour depending on qualifications and certifications.  

Overview: Working with children ages 3 months to 10 years, can foresee potential problems and have the specialty skills needed to solve them. Reports directly to the Child Care Center Director, top priori-ties for this position will include the supervision of children's recreation, and assisting with planning, organizing, and maintaining equipment and supplies. 

In addition, this position will: 

  • Clean and maintain an orderly room. 
  • Provide program information as needed. 
  • Demonstrate good communication skills. 
  • Provide excellent customer service. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Maintain a safe and sanitary environment for children in the daycare room daily. 
  • Assist in making sure that the daycare environment is always neat and orderly.

Mount Vernon Rec Center Drop–In Childcare Supervisor 

Mount Vernon is seeking qualified individual to supervise the childcare drop-in operation. The Childcare Supervisor will be responsible for the management of the drop-in childcare operation at Mount Vernon Rec Center. They will be required to help develop, plan and implement the childcare policies to ensure a safe, fun and nurturing environment for children.  Duties will include scheduling, hiring, monitoring staff to child ratios, program development, and supervision of paid or volunteer childcare workers. Position Overview: The Rec Center Manager on Duty is the designated park official responsible for supervising and enforcing operating policies and procedures. This role involves overseeing the facility during operational hours, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors. Candidates for this position must have a passion for community engagement, be a quick problem solver, and confidently manage a range of activities and staff. 

An ideal candidate for this position is reliable and willing to work a variety of shift days and times. They can communicate clearly with other managers, co-workers and customers. Supervisory experience is preferred. Candidates must possess the ability to interact with the public professionally and represent Fairfax County Park Authority with a positive image. Must be able to work effectively in a high-volume work situation. Must be able to motivate staff and make corrections in a professional and positive manner.  

Responsibilities:
