Turner Farm Park Observatory: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the operating hours of the park vs. the observatory?

  • The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
  • The observatory zone is open only during scheduled astronomy programs and events.

When is the observatory open to the public, and when do I need to register in advance?

  • The observatory is open during scheduled programs and events. All events require advance registration.

Which events are free, and which ones have a fee or require registration?

  • All events require registration. Applicable fees are listed under each registration link.

How can I find the upcoming event schedule (for example, “Night Sky Tour” or “Astronomy Festival”)?

What happens if the weather is cloudy or an event is canceled due to conditions?

  • Participants will be notified by email if a program or event is canceled.

Where should I park, and are restrooms available when the observatory is open at night?

  • Participants can park in the paved parking lot at 925 Springvale Road, Great Falls, Virginia 22066.
  • Restrooms are available for registered participants. 

Can I drop in to look through a telescope, or do I need to sign up?

  • There are no walk-in hours at the observatory. All visitors must register for programs in advance.

Are dogs or other pets allowed at observatory events or on the field after dusk?

  • Pets are not allowed inside the Roll-Top building but may be on park grounds in the observatory zone. All Fairfax County leash laws apply. 
  • Park grounds, including equestrian fields/rings are open dawn to dusk. 

Is the play area or picnic pavilion accessible during observatory events or only during the day?

  • The playground, picnic area and other areas outside the observatory zone are open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Are there any age requirements or experience needed for the astronomy programs?

What should I bring for an evening event?

  • Dress for the weather. All events are held outdoors, regardless of temperature. Participants will be notified by email if an event is canceled due to weather. 

How do I rent the pavilion or shelter, and are rentals possible during night events?
