70 Years of Excellence

#WeAreFCPA

We’re celebrating 70 years of excellence in Fairfax County parks – including the great team of Fairfax County Park Authority staff and volunteers who take care of our parks and help you enjoy them. From opening our Farmers Markets to maintaining fields to creating safe park programs, it takes hundreds of people – and a lot of creativity - to operate our 427 parks in this new world. Meet some of these great people in our #WeAreFCPA campaign. And if you’d like to share a story or #gratitudepost for an employee or volunteer, we’d love to hear it. Please send us a message or email parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov!

70 Years of Excellence

2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the Fairfax County Park Authority. On December 6, 1950, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors created the Fairfax County Park Authority, giving it the authority to make decisions concerning land acquisition, park development and operations in the county. Over the past seven decades, the park system has grown from a mere 14 acres to more than 23,500 acres of land that are home to 427 parks. The Park Authority now manages nine RECenters, nature centers, historic properties, golf courses and athletic fields throughout the Fairfax County.

The Park Authority is planning a series of activities to celebrate 70 Years of Excellence in Fairfax County parks.

Septuagenerian Spotlight

Henry Turner

How long have you been using Fairfax County golf courses?

Since 2001.

What keeps you coming back to golf at the Fairfax County golf courses?

Prices are reasonable and courses are usually in good condition.  The variety of courses, 9 or 18 holes, the level of difficulty makes playing these courses a challenge.

The league (Wednesday Men’s league) has led me to make some good golf friends and allowed me to introduce golfing friends to Pinecrest.

Any special memories you would like to share?

The first course I played here was Greendale.  The staff in 2001 was very friendly and welcoming. Sunday morning is my favorite day to play.

Any words of wisdom on what it means to be a 70+ year old golfer?

Get to the course early and warm up.  Not every course has a driving range.

Any advice for our next 70 years?

Invest in fairways and greens.  I would not mind paying a little more for a round if it went to improving the grounds, not the clubhouses.

Photos Document the Changes in Parks Over 70 Years

In 1950, you could buy a roll of film for your Kodak Brownie camera for less than a dollar.

Remember film?

Yes, a lot has changed since the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) got its start 70 years ago. The park system has grown from its initial nine acres to more than 23,500 today. In honor of the FCPA’s 70th Anniversary, here are a couple flashbacks to the early years of the agency.
