Manager on Duty

Agency: Park Authority
Salary: $12.00 - $16.00
Hours: March – December, Part time/30 hours per week average summer. Will include weekday/weekend, mornings, afternoons, evening shifts, and on holidays.

Location: Burke Lake Park 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Park Manager/Assistant Park Manager, responsible for overseeing an 888-acre park with 7 facilities and supervision of seasonal staff.  Duties to include, supervise all staff, including assigned facility and staff, create schedules, train staff, customer service, respond to emergencies, coordinate work groups, cash handling and end of day accounting, lite maintenance work, occasional custodial work and trash removal, inventory control, and special projects as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications: Have management experience, ability to work alone with minimal supervision, work with others in a team setting.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally, and in writing.  Must have a valid driver license with a good driving history.

Requirements: 

Must be able to work in conditions ranging from direct sunlight to complete darkness as well as inclement weather ranging from extreme cold to extreme heat. Must be able to walk on uneven terrain and lift up to 60 pounds repeatedly. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check.  Be certified in: First Aid, CPR, A.E.D, Boater Safety, Basic Water Safety within 30 days.

Lake Front Naturalist/Outdoor Instructor

Position Title: Park Naturalist/Outdoor Instructor 
Location: Burke Lake Park; 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039. 
Hours: Variable, but hours will include some mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Part time work averaging 19 to 30 hours per week. 
Salary: Ranging from $14.00 to $16.00 per hour. 

Instructor Description: Under the supervision of the Park Programmer presents interpretive programs with pro-vided outlines in natural and cultural history, geocaching, orienteering, outdoor recreation, kayaking and natural science topics for age groups ranging from preschool to adults. Groups can include school groups, scout groups, camps, public, thematic class series, events, and off-site and special request programs.  Assist operations staff with park events.  Assist in assessing the sites natural resources with the Lake Front Senior Interpreter. Assist Camp Director and play a vital role in our summer camps. Provide operational support to all programs.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience with natural sciences, education, recreation, or a closely related field.  Experience presenting educational programs to groups and teaching children. Ability to communicate effectively. Experience using a kayak or canoe or willingness to learn.  Strong organizational skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Must be at least 18 years old and have a clean driving record.  First Aid/CPR/AED certified or the ability to attain certification within the first six months of employment.

Closing Shift Supervisor

Position Title: Closing Shift Supervisor
Location: Lake Fairfax Park; 1400 Lake Fairfax Dr., Reston, Virginia 20190. 
Hours: 20-30 hours per week; weekend, evening, and some holiday work is required 
Salary: $11.43 per hour. 
Duties Include: 

  • Assists with the operation of a park and visitor center/office including the operation of point-of-sale unit, answering telephone, greeting visitors, enforcing rules and regulations, and handling customer service is-sues. 
  • Closes the facility and park as assigned; confirms facility and monies are secured; ensures facility is clean and ready to operate the next day. 
  • Completes point-of-sale batch-out, balance and reconciliation of the cash collection, and preparation of bank deposits. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  • All applicants should have the ability to work with people of all ages, communicate effectively both oral-ly and in writing, and have ability to use a personal computer.
  • Motor vehicle operator’s license. 
  • First Aid and CPR/AED certification

Lakefront Park Attendant

Status: G (Part-Time, 900 hours per year maximum)

Schedule: 24 hours/week, mostly weekends and some holidays

Salary: $8.58-$12/hour

Duties include:

  • Ensures the safe and effective operation of various park facilities that may include depending on the hiring site: campground, marina, mini-golf, carousel, miniature train, and public gathering areas.
  • Greets patrons and provides information regarding facilities, directions, park regulations and rules, safety information, etc.
  • Perform cash handling procedures as needed
  • Assist in boat rental procedures and ensures the safety of patrons partaking in watercraft activities
  • Assist in carousel operation and ensures the safety of all riders
  • Monitor campground and ensure all guests adhere to facility rules and regulations
  • Maintains cleanliness of park facilities
  • Assist in park events and programs as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Hours: variable, ranging from 9am-9pm

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to perform light to medium labor outdoors on land and water. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Must be able to work alone and with others depending on the nature of assignments, be adaptable, maintain positive interactions with all park staff, volunteers and visitors, and demonstrate follow through on assignments. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and must provide a driving record to the satisfaction of the employer. CPR/first aid certified or able to obtain certification within 3 months of employment.

Train Station Attendant

Hours: Weekends only April – Memorial Day, Part time/30 hours per week average summer, 21 hours average weekends Labor Day – end of October. Will include mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

Job Description: 

  • Staff will work at the park train station as cashiers and ticket takers and facility operators including driving the CP Huntington miniature train and operating the carousel.
  • Staff assist patrons with park information and directions.
  • Other responsibilities include track work, facility upkeep, and maintenance. 

Qualifications: 

  • Driver’s license required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with citizen inquires and questions.
  • Must be able to repeatedly lift 20 lbs. or more
  • CPR preferred.
