As the McLean Market gets into full swing, we celebrate the life of Maya Huber (1929-2025) who passed away at the age of 95. Active in the McLean Citizens Association (MCA) and the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations (FCFCA), Maya served as vice president and Planning and Zoning Committee chair and became Land Use chairman for the county-wide Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations (FCFCA) both in 1973. A strong advocate for preserving the county’s agricultural heritage, Maya established the McLean Farmers Market in 1980 so local farmers would have a market for their produce. There are now 10 farmers markets in the county administered by the Park Authority. Maya was appointed At-Large Planning Commissioner in 1987 serving until 2003. She remained active in the community participating in McLean’s civic organizations, serving on the McLean Community Center Board and as a trustee of the McLean (Citizens) Community Foundation, and on various land use task forces. A gardener at heart, she maintained a plot in Lewinsville Park and took pride in her vegetables, herbs and berries. Always an environmental, parks and McLean advocate, she will be missed by her family, friends and neighbors. Her family requests that her memory be honored with contributions to the McLean Community Foundation or the Fairfax County Parks Foundation for the McLean Farmer’s Market.
