Hidden Oaks Nature Center Birthday Parties

Celebrate your child's special day in style at a Hidden Oaks nature-themed birthday party!  Choose your party topic -- dinosaurs, insects, reptiles, mammals, sea critters, or Eastern Woodland Indians -- and prepare for a memorable experience!

New Themes

Animal Pajama Birthday Party: Invite your party guests to wear pajamas and learn what our native animal friends do when darkness falls. Say goodnight to the nature center's exhibit animals, and close with a bedtime animal story. You bring refreshments. We provide a craft.

Nocturnal Animals Birthday Party: Invite your party guests to bring a flashlight (or provide them as party favors) for an evening hike around a trail. We'll provide red cellophane to preserve your night vision. Learn about native, nocturnal animals and do a short craft. Bring your own refreshments.

Party Particulars

  • Ages: 3-12
  • Fee: $250 for 16 or fewer children
  • Beyond 16 participants, an additional fee of $12 per child
  • Maximum number of children: 24
  • Siblings 12 years and under count as party participants
  • Maximum number of adults in the room: 30

Party participants enjoy a 45-minute, naturalist-led presentation that includes at least one live animal, a craft, and a nature walk. Themes may be adapted or enhanced based on the birthday child's interests.

The recommended party time is 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with the naturalist-led portion beginning at 10:15 a.m. Families will have the classroom to arrange their party food and decorations starting at 9:30 a.m. The exhibit discovery room with costumes and a tree house is open 9:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. for party participants. Additional party times may be available in the afternoon or evening.

Children sit at two tables for refreshments, which must be provided by the family. Food and beverages may only be consumed at the tables.
Supervision of children in the exhibit area and straightening up after the party is the party host's responsibility.
The party hosts must clean up and exit the classroom by 11:45 a.m. The nature center opens to the public at noon (and at 11 a.m. in December, January and February).

To Book a Party:

1. Call the nature center at 703-941-1065 to check availability for your desired date or dates. You will receive a party agreement form via email or when you visit.
2. Upon receiving the notice of your party date acceptance, complete and return the party agreement form with the full fee. Cancellations made more than two weeks from the party date receive full refunds minus a nonrefundable $25 administrative fee. No refunds are made for cancellations within two weeks from the party date. Staff will review the program outline with you upon request.
3. Bring your party food and supplies to Hidden Oaks at 9:30 a.m. on the day of your party. Small amounts of ice cream and beverages may be stored in our refrigerator. Red beverages and alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
4. While you are welcome to bring decorations, they are really not necessary as the party room will be decorated for your theme. Please, no balloons. You may wish to bring two rectangular tablecloths for the refreshment tables. The nature center has a green party checklist and rewards for hosting a "green" birthday party! Should you wish to host a party for a child less than three years of age or just want to have a party at Hidden Oaks without a theme or naturalist, please check the Room Rental information on our webpage.
