
Ray leads the conservation sector for The Compass Group, a national fundraising consulting company, where he works with nonprofit clients including National Parks friends groups and others. He has held executive positions at the National Forest Foundation and National Parks Conservation Association. Early in his career, he developed corporate partnerships for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
A 38-year resident of Fairfax County, Ray has served as Braddock District appointee to the Environmental Quality Advisory Council, as a board member of the Community Appearance Alliance of Northern Virginia, and as Senior Warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) in Burke. He currently serves on the boards of the Public Lands Alliance (Washington) and Shrine Mont (Orkney Springs VA). Other service includes the boards of New Futures (Washington) and EarthShare (national), and committees of Washington National Cathedral (Washington) and Partners for Sacred Places (Philadelphia). A passionate public speaker, he has presented at the Public Lands Alliance, Land Trust Alliance, International Conference of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Center for Nonprofit Advancement, and as a guest lecturer at George Mason University, University of Virginia (Fairfax campus), and Michigan State University.
Ray and his wife Diana raised their four children in Fairfax County, all of whom are proud graduates of Fairfax County Public Schools. Three are graduates of Virginia public universities, and their youngest begins at JMU this fall.
Ray's hobbies include playing jazz, creative photography, hiking, and reading. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA and MA in History.
