When transferring, bus rides will now be free for all routes except Fairfax Connector Express Service, which will be discounted $2 from the total fare when using a SmarTrip card or the SmarTrip App.

Beginning August,19, 2020, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will begin work to reconstruct and replace the escalator banks and escalators at the south entrance of the Huntington Metrorail Station. The construction is being expedited to impact the least number of customers while the Metrorail ridership is low due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Construction activities are scheduled to last until mid-January 2021.

Fairfax Connector will resume service to the bus loop at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride as construction has been completed. Customers may board buses in the bus loop beginning on Monday, July 13, 2020.
Other construction activity continues at the Park and Ride to prepare for Silver Line Phase 2 Metrorail service, including the Kiss and Ride lot, which will be closed until Silver Line Phase 2 Metrorail service begins next year.

Passengers on Fairfax Connector buses will be required to wear face coverings, a measure the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will make effective starting Monday, May 18, 2020, with a weeklong grace period through Monday, May 25, 2020. County officials previously encouraged riders to wear face coverings, but that will now become mandatory. This enhanced safety measure aims to help Fairfax Connector passengers protect each other and bus operators during the ongoing COVID-19 situation and follows guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Fairfax County Department of Transportation announces the expansion of service on Fairfax Connector bus routes 462 and 467, effective Saturday, May 9, 2020, to assist travelers during the demolition and reconstruction of the Cedar Lane Bridge over I-66. The Cedar Lane Bridge reconstruction effort is part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Transform 66-Outside the Beltway project and is expected to begin mid-May, 2020, and last through November 2020.

Beginning May 4, Fairfax Connector bus service at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be relocated to temporary stops on Sunrise Valley Drive. The relocation of service is due to necessary construction on the bus loop. Improvements are needed to prepare for bus and rail service, as this location will convert to the Herndon Metrorail Station when Phase 2 of the Silver Line is completed in 2020. Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) announces that beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2020, Fairfax Connector customers will be required to enter and exit the bus using the rear doors. This does not apply to customers who need to use a wheelchair ramp. Fare collection on buses will also be temporarily suspended due to the location of fareboxes and SmarTrip equipment at the front entrance of buses.

Beginning this Memorial Day, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will be closing three Metrorail Orange Line stations for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. To expedite construction and minimize customer inconvenience, Vienna, Dunn Loring and East Falls Church Metrorail stations will be closed from Saturday, May 23, 2020, through Monday, Sept. 7, 2020, to allow for around-the-clock work. The station closures are part of WMATA's three-year Platform Improvement Project that will completely reconstruct the outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations, making them safer and more accessible for customers with disabilities, while also addressing safety concerns and longstanding structural issues.

FCDOT will open an online survey, available from Wednesday, Oct. 23 – Sunday, November 30, 2019 for the public to provide input about improvements to bus service in Herndon and Reston and to future Metrorail Silver Line Phase 2 stations. Residents may provide input on the service alternatives by completing the survey at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/herndon-reston-service-review. Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will hold a second round of community input meetings and engagement opportunities to encourage public input on alternatives developed to provide enhanced Fairfax Connector bus service in the Reston and Herndon areas, including connections to the future Metrorail Silver Line Phase 2 stations in Herndon and Reston. After this round of public engagement, FCDOT staff will develop a preferred service plan to provide better access to destinations, improved travel times, increased schedule reliability and more dependable service. The community will have an opportunity to review and comment on the preferred service plan in early 2020.

Due to construction on I-66 as part of Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project, the Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 will be closed from on or around October 18, 2019, and will remain closed until summer 2020. This closure will allow for bridge reconstruction and addition of an express lanes ramps to and from the west. A new Vaden Drive bridge is needed to accommodate the future, wider I-66, and will provide dedicated express lanes access to and from the west for buses and cars only.
Due to the bridge closure, Fairfax Connector Routes 621, 622, 623, 624, 630, 631, 632, 634, 640, 641, 642, 644, 650, 651, 652, 698 will detour to exit the Vienna Metrorail Station.

Due to the Columbus Day Holiday, Fairfax Connector will be operating Holiday Weekday Service on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019. All routes will operate regular weekday service except Routes 231, 232, 335, 393, 394, 395, 422, 432, 461, 494, 495, 556, 585, 599, 624, 634, 698, 699, 724 and 985, which will NOT operate at all. Route 980 will run every 12-15 minutes instead of every 6-8 minutes.

Fall for Fairfax KidsFest will be held on Oct 5-6 2019 at the Fairfax County Government Center. Beginning September 23 through December 2019, Fairfax Connector bus service at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be relocated to a temporary stop on Sunrise Valley Drive. The relocation of service is due to necessary construction on the bus loop.
Improvements are needed to prepare for bus and rail service, as this location will convert to the Herndon Metrorail Station when Phase 2 of the Silver Line is completed in 2020. Fairfax County thanks our customers for their patience during construction.

Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will hold a community input meeting on Fairfax Connector proposed service changes that aim to enhance service to customers. The meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Eagle View Elementary School, 4500 Dixie Hill Road in Fairfax. The public is invited to attend and comment on the proposed changes. In addition to the community meeting, Fairfax Connector staff will connect with customers, in person throughout September, on routes that are affected by the proposed service changes.

To support Fairfax County commuters impacted by the Metrorail platform reconstruction work on the Blue and Yellow line stations this summer, Fairfax Connector is offering enhanced service on express routes from the Springfield area to the Pentagon requiring deployment of extra buses to Fairfax Connector Routes 393 and 394.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation has awarded a 5-year contract, plus 10 optional years, to Transdev North America for the operations of Fairfax Connector fixed-route bus service, effective July 1, 2019. The base contract cost (start-up and fiscal years one through five) is approximately $443 million. Transdev will immediately begin activities to transition operations from the current contractor, working closely with Fairfax Connector staff to ensure a seamless transition.

Beginning this Memorial Day, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will be closing six (6) Metrorail Blue and Yellow line stations south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently approved new Fairfax Connector bus service - Routes 308 and 467 and service changes to existing service - Routes 161/162, 321/322, 334, RIBS 1/3, and 699. FCDOT continues to solicit feedback on how people get around in the Franconia-Springfield area on the local transit network. Input from transit riders and residents is a key component of making Fairfax Connector service more convenient, accessible and efficient.
On the heels of an online survey which resulted in over 750 responses, FCDOT is scheduled to host two (2) open house events next month for residents to take part in interactive activities and to give input.
Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is seeking public input on proposed changes to Fairfax Connector service that aim to enhance the customer experience. ALERT: Effective today, Metro announced the south parking garage at the Huntington Station on the Yellow line will be closed indefinitely in preparation for demolition. Additional parking is available for customers in the middle and north garages that can easily accommodate the approximately 300 spaces that will be affected.
